Biography/Historical Note

Thomas H. Chirgwin (1866-1940) is the son of Thomas H. Chirguin, a mariner from Falmouth, England, and Ann Jane Cleveland. He was born in 1866 in Edgartown, Massachusetts, and lived there until his death in 1940. Chirgwin married Lisa Schutz (1874- ) of Luxembourg in Edgartown in 1897. The couple had 5 children Ruth Ann, Fred H, Eunice, Helen, and Thomas H. In 1911 they started the Colonial Inn on North Water Street in Edgartown.

Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of invoices and canceled checks belonging to Thomas H. Chirgwin when he was the proprietor of the Colonial Inn. The letter concerns an industrial accident involving a Mary Alice Bicknell. The notebook at the end of the collection contains both personal and business accounts including accounting lists, several pages of what appear to be a history assignment by Thomas' son Fred, and a draft of a letter from Thomas' daughter Helen to Aunt Abbie.
