Biography/Historical Note

The first deeds in the collection, 1646-1700, correspond to the early period of European settlement on Martha’s Vineyard. Most of these deeds include a member of the Mayhew family acquiring or selling land, as the Mayhew family led the first wave of European settlement to the island. This period of first contact between the Wampanoags and European settlers, means that Indian deeds are common in this early part of the collection. A number of important Vineyard families appear frequently amongst the deeds throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. These include the Norton, Pease, Mayhew, and Kelley families, among many others. Starting in the 1850’s, less common surnames become more frequent, as the population of Martha’s Vineyard expands. Indian deeds became less frequent as more and more land on Martha’s Vineyard was purchased and owned by the white settlers and their descendents.

Scope and Content of Collection

While most of the deeds in the collection are originals, some are reproductions. These include scans of the original, written copies, photocopies and typed transcriptions. Unless the deed is said to be a scan, copy (written), photocopy or transcription (typed), it can be assumed it is original. Nearly all the original deeds have seals on them. This practice, while becoming somewhat anachronistic, continues through the 20th century. The bulk of the collection occurs between 1720-1840. The town of Edgartown (which included Oak Bluffs for much of this collection) is the location for most of the deeds. Though Tisbury (which included West Tisbury) is also common. The collection also includes numerous deeds for church pews at the Methodist Episcopal Church of Edgartown, the Methodist Episcopal Church of Tisbury, and the Baptist Meeting House of Holmes Hole.
