Biography/Historical Note
Charles E. Banks was born July 6, 1854 in Portland, Maine to Edward Prince and Ellen (Soule) Banks. In high school he was active in the theater and writing programs. After high school he pursued medicine and graduated from Dartmouth Medical School in 1877. Later Banks became head surgeon of the Marine Hospital here on the Vineyard where he became interested in genealogies and was involved in numerous publications, including History of Martha’s Vineyard. He died in Hartford, Connecticut on October 22, 1931 and was buried on the island in Tisbury in Oak Grove Cemetery.
Scope and Content of Collection
The collection contains birth records, photographs, court records, church records, newspaper clippings, correspondence, deeds, drawings, estate records, genealogies, maps, indexes, leaflets, meeting minutes, notebooks, obituaries, pedigrees, probate records, proofs, publications, research notes, town seals, school records, and signatures from Charles Edward Banks' genealogical and historical work on Martha's Vineyard. The collection is predominately genealogical notes, many of which were originally created by Harriet M. Pease, Richard L. Pease, and Annie C. Pratt, and then annotated and expanded by Banks. Some of the materials were found in Banks' original organization and that arrangement was preserved. The collection also includes copies of Banks' publication The History of Martha's Vineyard and the research materials accumulated during its creation.
